- Learn to foster healthy relationships that contribute to feelings of self-worth; Promote alternatives to being sexually active
- Become aware of how peers and the media influence one’s feelings and attitudes while learning to think independently
- Examine gender roles and stereotypes, male and female roles, communication styles, and attitudes about sex
- Recognize patterns of attraction and learn to choose dating relationships that support your values and goals in life
STD and AIDS AWARENESS
Goals and Objectives:
- Learn how to identify, prevent and treat different types of STDs
- Introduce abstinence as the only 100% method to avoid the sexual transmission of STDs and AIDS
- Discuss the difference between HIV and AIDS
- Learn to make healthy and positive decisions to remain abstinent; to change behavior to protect oneself
- Emphasize the need to get tested if you are (or have been) sexually active or an IV drug user
- Learn about each person’s responsibility in controlling the spread of STDs
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION
Goals and Objectives:
- Develop a critical awareness of how environmental influences and messages in the media encourage drug use
- Understand and personalize the process of progression of substance use and abuse
- Understand the physical, emotional and psychological effects of drugs and alcohol
- Understand the links between daily attitudes and actions and achieving one’s future goals
- Learn coping skills to refuse explicit drug offers and to protect oneself in drug-related situations
- Learn to channel energy into positive outlets as a substitute for drug use
BUDGETS AND BANKING
Goals and Objectives:
- Understand the influence of advertising, music, and the media on one’s attitude toward money, personal needs, and sense of self-worth
- Be able to distinguish between wants and needs
- Learn how to set goals and do financial planning
- Learn how to use a budget as a tool to manage income and expenses
- Learn how to use the services of a bank, how to write a check and reconcile a bank statement
- Learn the benefits of saving money, investing and making smart financial decisions
- Understand the consequences of spending more than one makes, of accumulating debt, and the dangers of bad credit
- Learn how to analyze the cost of goods and services and get the best value for your money
- Learn about financial markets and the basics of how to buy and sell stocks
